If adoption has crossed your mind, your view of this option has already been shaped by personal experience, stories you’ve heard, or things you’ve seen online. Some of those ideas may reflect reality. Others may only tell part of the story.
One thing is important to understand from the beginning: choosing adoption is not the same as giving up on your child. For many women, it is a thoughtful decision made out of care, love, and a desire to provide stability and opportunity. And today, birth parents can have far more involvement in the process than many women realize.
What Adoption Can Look Like Today
Modern adoption is often much more personal and flexible than ever before. As a birth mother, you will be able to:
- Choose the adoptive family
- Create an adoption plan that reflects your wishes and comfort level
- Decide how much communication or ongoing contact you would like after placement
There are several types of adoption, each offering a different level of openness and connection.
Open Adoption
In an open adoption, the birth mother and adoptive family have direct communication. That could include phone calls, letters, visits, photos, or emails over time. Every adoption relationship is different and built around what both parties agree to.
Semi-Open Adoption
A semi-open adoption allows communication to happen through a third party, such as an agency or attorney. Some information may be shared while still maintaining a level of privacy.
You could receive messages, letters, or photos from the adoptive family through the third party.
Closed Adoption
In a closed adoption, identifying information is kept confidential, and there is no ongoing contact after placement. While less common today, some women prefer this arrangement because it allows for greater privacy and sometimes safety in certain situations.
Support Throughout the Process
It may also help to know that adoption plans are typically arranged at no financial cost to the birth parent. In many cases, medical expenses beyond insurance coverage, legal fees, and other adoption-related costs are covered under the adoption plan.
Depending on the adoption agency and state laws, support may also be available for medical care, legal services, counseling, transportation, maternity clothing, or housing assistance during pregnancy.
