More Than a Positive Test
A pregnancy test can confirm hCG is present, but an ultrasound offers a much clearer picture of what is actually happening in the pregnancy.
A limited obstetrical ultrasound can show:
- Location of the pregnancy: Confirms the pregnancy is inside the uterus
- Pregnancy progression: Detects cardiac activity, an early sign that the pregnancy is developing
- How far along you are: When possible, we can estimate gestational age and give you an approximate due date

How It Works
An ultrasound uses sound waves that bounce off tissue inside your body to produce images on a screen, allowing providers to see inside your uterus and gather insightful information about your pregnancy. There is no radiation involved.
The type of ultrasound performed depends on how far along you are:
A transvaginal ultrasound may be used in early pregnancy. A small wand-shaped device is inserted into the vagina to provide clearer images during the earliest stages of pregnancy.
Abdominal ultrasounds are more commonly used later in pregnancy. A small amount of gel is applied to the abdomen, and a handheld device, a transducer, is gently moved across the skin to create images.
Ultrasounds are typically brief and not painful, though some women notice mild pressure during the scan, particularly when the bladder is full to help improve image quality.
A Note on Ectopic Pregnancies
Roughly 1 to 2% of known pregnancies are ectopic, meaning the fertilized egg has implanted outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. An ectopic pregnancy cannot continue and requires prompt medical care. Left untreated, it can cause internal bleeding and become a serious, life-threatening situation.
A pregnancy test cannot detect an ectopic pregnancy. An ultrasound is the only way to confirm the location of the pregnancy.
While we are not able to diagnose this condition, if your ultrasound does not show a pregnancy inside the uterus, we will make sure you are pointed toward the right care immediately.
What the Early Weeks Can Tell You
The first weeks of pregnancy carry important information. Cardiac activity is one of the earliest indicators of a pregnancy’s progress. Miscarriage affects about 1 in 4 known pregnancies, and knowing where things stand early gives you the information you need, whether that means peace of mind or timely follow-up care.
