How Pregnancy Testing Works
Pregnancy tests are designed to detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, in urine. HCG is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining and as the placenta begins to develop; it rises quickly in early pregnancy, often doubling every 48 to 72 hours.
When hCG reaches a detectable level in your system, the test will return a positive result. If levels have not yet climbed high enough, which can happen when testing too early, the result may show a false negative even when a pregnancy is present.
This is why waiting until after a missed period can give the most accurate result.
The Role of hCG
HCG does more than confirm a pregnancy. It signals your body to stop menstruating, supports the uterine lining as the embryo develops, and helps sustain the pregnancy. Levels continue to rise through the first trimester before gradually leveling off around week 10.
When Should I Test?
Mayo Clinic recommends the most reliable time to take a pregnancy test is a day or two after a missed period for reliable results. A few things to keep in mind:
- First morning urine tends to give the most accurate result, since hCG is most concentrated
- Testing too early increases the chance of a false negative
- False positives are uncommon but can occur after a recent pregnancy, a miscarriage, or with certain medications
- If your period still hasn’t come after a negative result, try testing again in a few days
